Burkina Faso, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has obtained financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to support the preservation of biodiversity. This support is part of the “Biofin” initiative, dedicated to the mobilization of resources for biodiversity, hence the official launch, which took place on September 18, 2025 in Ouagadougou.

This inaugural meeting aims to allow participants to take ownership of Biofin's vision and fundamental objectives, while discovering how to implement the planned actions. The workshop also aims to promote the concrete and sustained involvement of stakeholders in order to ensure the success of the initiative in Burkina Faso.

The chief of staff of the Minister of the Environment, Ousmane Bawar, welcomed this approach, calling it a strategic opportunity to analyze in depth the causes of biodiversity loss, whether political, institutional or economic.

Ultimately, Biofin should enable the development of a biodiversity financing plan that is both inclusive, innovative and adapted to the realities of the country.
