Message from the Minister in charge of the Environment on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity
<< The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) is celebrated on 22 May each year to commemorate the adoption of the text of the Convention on Biological Diversity. This international event aims to improve understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues, including aspects related to biosafety and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.
Biological diversity is, by definition, the variability of living organisms of all origins including, among others, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are a part; this includes diversity within and between species and between species as well as that of ecosystems. It covers all forms of life on Earth including natural characteristics. It is essential for human well-being, the health of the planet and the economic prosperity of all people, including the achievement of balanced lifestyles in harmony with Mother Earth.
In order to carry out coordinated conservation and restoration actions, the Kunming-Montreal Global Framework for Biological Diversity was adopted as a global framework.
Our country participates in the implementation of the global framework through the adoption of the National Biodiversity Strategy 2025-2030 together with its three-year action plan 2025-2027. This ambitious strategy, which takes into account new challenges, should enable our country to reverse the trends of ecosystem degradation and the loss of biological diversity and promote the socio-economic development of our populations.
The 31st International Day for Biological Diversity is commemorated this year under the theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development”. It calls for collective action to take care of our nature just as it takes care of us. It is obvious that the satisfaction of our social, environmental and economic needs cannot be done on the fringes of an unbalanced nature, which is why the theme is relevant.
Being in harmony with nature is essential for achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Goals and targets of the Global Framework.

Succeeding in the challenge of “harmony with nature” requires effective institutional frameworks but also adequate tools for implementation. Based on this, our country has established a national platform for the consultation of biodiversity actors, a national framework on access and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources (APA).
The reports on the state of the environment in Burkina Faso, the national strategy for environmental education and eco-citizenship 2024-2028, and many other policy documents provide the basis for promoting the conservation and sustainable use of biological resources in our country.
With regard to the place of biodiversity in the socio-economic development of populations, I invite all actors, especially women and young people, to be more committed and synergistic in the preservation of nature.
I call for more active solidarity with local communities, civil society organizations, the private sector and technical and financial partners for strong actions and sustainable financing in favor of biodiversity.
Let's work harder to stop the destruction of biological diversity, which remains essential for a harmonious life with nature, and therefore for Sustainable Development. Everyone in the community has a role to play so that our historical and collective responsibility towards future generations is real and, above all, useful.
Happy celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity!
God bless Burkina Faso, Homeland or Death, we will win, thank you! >>
