Biological diversity is the foundation of sustainable development in Burkina Faso where natural resources play a major role in the lives of mainly rural populations. Indeed, biodiversity supports the functioning of ecosystems and provides ecosystem services that are essential for human well-being. It ensures food safety, human health as well as the supply of drinking water and clean air.
Despite its importance, biological diversity continues to be depleted due to anthropogenic pressures and natural factors.
Therefore, the transversal nature of biological diversity requires that this dimension be taken into account in all policies and planning tools. In the particular field of environmental assessments, the observation that biological diversity is not sufficiently taken into account remains a reality in environmental and social management plans.
To this end, an initial guide had been developed but did not sufficiently take into account all the dimensions of biological diversity in environmental assessments. Also, this guide does not sufficiently take into account the specificities of development sectors that have variable impacts on biodiversity.
It then becomes imperative to update the guide previously developed to take into account the shortcomings identified and other specific concerns of biodiversity in environmental assessments.
Objective of this study is to improve the consideration of Environment and Sustainable Development themes in Burkina Faso.
