Biological Diversity and Green Economy Support Project: When birds, bees and business meet
NATURAMA (BirdLife Burkina Faso) and its partners, through the Biological Diversity and Green Economy Support Project (PADEV), called “Birds, Bees and Business (BBB)”, are experimenting with a new approach that combines the well-being of populations, the protection of the environment and the creation of income for rural communities.

The conservation of terrestrial migratory birds is at the heart of the interventions of NATURAMA (BirdLife Burkina Faso) and its partners. As part of the Biological Diversity and Green Economy Support Project (PADEV), called “Birds, Bees and Business (BBB)”, a revolutionary approach is being tested. It makes it possible to reconcile business, the protection of terrestrial migratory birds and the improvement of the livelihoods of communities in Burkina Faso, a country located in the heart of West Africa. The PADEV essentially aims to strengthen the capacities of rural communities in the shea zone in Burkina Faso for better management of inclusive natural landscapes in order to improve livelihoods and the sustainable conservation of the habitats of terrestrial migratory birds in some provinces of Burkina Faso, including Nahouri (Center-South), Ioba (South-West), Ioba (South-West), Sissili and Ziro (Center-West) in some provinces of Burkina Faso, including Nahouri (Center-South), including Nahouri (Center-South), Ioba (South-West), and Ziro (Center-West). The overall objective of PADEV-BBB is to “create together a diverse landscape that provides food for birds and people, forms a bulwark against desertification and is a source of sustainable trade”.
According to the 3rd Report on the State of the Environment in Burkina Faso published in 2010, “The environment is subject to numerous increasing pressures in the various development sectors, the most important of which are the sectors of agriculture, livestock, forestry and the energy consumed for transport, industries and the satisfaction of domestic needs. These activities are also amplified by the country's strong demographic growth and the weakness of the population's economic resources and their strong dependence on natural resources.” In such a context, PADEV-BBB is at the right time to make its contribution to the conservation of biodiversity and the fight against poverty.
For Idrissa ZEBA, Executive Director of NATURAMA, “In its objectives and vision, the PADEV-BBB Project meets the objectives of the National Sustainable Development Policy of Burkina Faso, in particular through the promotion of sustainable production and consumption patterns. It also contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals, in these points 1, 2, 5, 5, 12, 13, 15 and 17. It also participates in the objectives of the 1979 Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals or Bonn Convention (CMS), the objectives of BirdLife International, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) or even the Aichi objectives, in points A.1, A.2, A.2, A.4, B.5 and B.7.”
